In 27 letters to his brother Emmett and family (New York state) D.S. "Salvo" Hyde writes of his successful provisions business,
financial details of the trade, and arrangements for ordering goods from the east. Other topics are Sacramento fires, heavy
storms, a levee break and resulting flood, building a fireproof store, etc. He writes of setting up stores in Hoboken (on
the American River) and at Indian Springs (near the Hangtown road), and comments on the greater profits of stores in the mining
area vs. stores in town. He writes of a small pox epidemic, of crops, discusses family business and property, and his medical
treatments. He mentions his wife Nancy and her sewing business in some letters. One letter describes a mining tunnel in which
he had shares hitting paydirt. In other letters he mentions state and national politics, a lawsuit against Vanderbilt relating
to dysentery contracted during his voyage west, the Fraser River gold rush in British Columbia, his hog farm, the unique vocabulary
of emigrants from Pike Co (MO), and his plans for a shoe store. Also includes two letters from Nancy Hyde after Hyde's death,
as well as death certificates.
